How Materiality Conversations Change Before Year-End Close

Why finance teams and auditors should settle planning materiality early, and what documents make that discussion productive.

Materiality is not a single percentage pulled from a textbook. For trading companies in Tottori and neighbouring prefectures, we often start with profit before tax, then cross-check against revenue and total assets when margins are thin or inventory-heavy.

Bring last year’s adjusting entries, known one-off gains, and any related-party transactions to the planning meeting. Those items change how we set performance materiality for individual account tests.

If your board expects a clean report by a fixed shareholder meeting date, tell us that date before we set sample sizes. Compressed calendars usually mean earlier interim testing on receivables and inventory rather than larger samples at the last minute.

A short written materiality memo shared with the controller reduces late surprises. It also gives your team a fair basis to challenge our thresholds when your business model does not match generic manufacturing benchmarks.
